If you can mouth the words, you can speak again.

For people who have lost their voice but can still move their mouth: after a laryngectomy, with vocal cord paralysis, a tracheostomy, or spasmodic dysphonia. A small sensor on the face reads the words you mouth and turns them into text on a screen, or a voice from a speaker.

The prototype on my own face. No sound comes out of me; the words come out of the computer.

What you get

  • A unit fitted to you, in person, by me
  • The software: your mouthed words typed, or spoken by a voice
  • I keep working on it until it works for you, or I refund you
  • Nothing stuck to the skin long term; no surgery, no gel, nothing in the mouth

Honest limits

  • You must be able to move your lips, jaw and tongue. It reads movement, not thoughts
  • Today it works for the person who built it. Making it work for you is the job
  • Start with a fixed set of phrases, then grow
  • This is an input device, not a medical treatment

Questions

Who is this for?

Anyone who understands speech and can still shape words with their mouth, but can't make sound: after laryngectomy, vocal cord paralysis, tracheostomy, or severe spasmodic dysphonia. If the muscles of the mouth are themselves weakened, it may not work, and I'll tell you honestly at the fitting.

How long does a fitting take?

About an hour the first time: placing the sensor, recording you mouthing a set of phrases, and testing. Then it improves every time you use it.

Is it a medical device?

No. It makes no medical claims and treats nothing. It is an input device, like a keyboard, that you control with your mouth instead of your fingers.

Why a deposit?

So I know you mean it, and you know I do. If I can't make it work for you, you get it back.

A family I've never met found my parents' phone number after the newspaper story and asked if this could work for their daughter. This page is for them, and for you.
